Top Ottawa restaurateur going organic with the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa

Stephen Beckta, a Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa alumnus and current Board of Directors
member, to establish organic garden at Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa’s Britannia Clubhouse

June 5, 2013 –Ottawa, ON– Can kidsthese daystell carrots from kale? Fiddleheads from
fennel? With the help of esteemed Ottawa restaurateur Stephen Beckta, thousands of the city’s
children and youth are getting hands-on lessons abouttheir food – and where it comes from.
Beckta, proprietor of Beckta Dining and Wine, Play Food and Wine and Gezellig Dining, is
spearheading a garden planting project at the Boys and Girls Club ofOttawa’s Britannia location
(2825 Dumaurier Avenue.)

Beckta, a Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa alumni and current Board of Directors member, is
funding the project through money raised from Beckta Dining & Wine’stenth anniversary
dinner and cocktail party, held in May. As well, he is contributing the $1,000 prize he received
from GE Monogram at April’s Terroir Awards.

On Thursday, June 6 at 4:00 p.m., youth members from the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa’s
Britannia Clubhouse will begin planting, under the help and direction of Beckta’s team.

“It’s always a challenge to get kids to not only eat well, but also to really think about where
their food comes from,” says Scott Bradford, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of
Ottawa. “With this help and commitment from Stephen, our members will get to have a vested
interest in their health and their food and in turn, we can help ensure they remain as healthy as
they can be.”
