At the Annual General Meeting and Scholarship Presentation on May 27, 2015, over $27,000 in scholarships was awarded to Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa youth Members.
Congratulations to our scholarship winners!
Ottawa Police 150th Anniversary Scholarship ($5,000 over two years): Established to support youth who wish to pursue a career in policing or related criminal justice field. Awarded to Adam Robillard. Adam has been a member since 2007 frequenting our Britannia and Rochester Clubhouses participating in club activities as well as Leaders 4 Life. He will be attending Carleton University for the Bachelor of Arts program in Criminology. Adam hopes to be a Youth Probation Officer in order to help our most vulnerable youth in the city.
Vince and Linda Bevan Scholarship ($5,000 over two years): Created to recognize the Bevans and their contribution to the community. Awarded to Olivia Boisvert. A BGCO Member since she was six years old, Olivia has been active in the Britannia Clubhouse, in Leaders-4-Life and at Camp Smitty. Olivia will be attending a combined program with Algonquin College and Carleton University for Interactive Multimedia and Design and hopes to have a career in Graphic Design.
Louis and Doris Albert Scholarship ($5,000 over two years): Established to support deserving students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to pursue post-secondary education. Awarded to Baininwa Amissi. Baininwa has been a member of the Rideau Clubhouse for the last two years. He is originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and also lived in Burundi, immigrating to Canada due to political unrest back home. He has overcome many obstacles but his ultimate goal is to save lives. Baininwa wants to become a Neurosurgeon and will be attending the University of Ottawa in the Honours Bachelor of Science program specializing in Biology.
Charles King Scholarship Fund ($2,000 one-time): Created in 2014 to honour life and legacy of Charles King who believed in the power of education. Awarded to Hajer Furat, William Wang and Jiuzhi (Joe) Wang.
Hajer has been a member at the Police Youth Centre since being chosen for the Youth in Policing Initiative in 2013. She enjoys volunteering her time in assisting the staff in several departments and activities. She will be attending Carleton University pursuing an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Law, with a concentration in Transnational Law and Human rights, in hopes to one day become an International Diplomat.
William has been a BGCO member for the last five years. He started out as a volunteer at the Police Youth Centre and due to his dedication, became part-time staff at the young age of 15. His dream is to become a pharmacist and ensure people have access to the right medicine as inspired by his late grandmother. Due to his excellent academic record, William has been accepted to the University of Toronto distinguished program of Life Sciences, the University of Waterloo Honours Science, and the University of Ottawa Bachelor of Science with Honours in Biopharmaceutical Sciences.
Joe is an International Student from China studying in Ottawa, and a member of the Club since his arrival three years ago. His passion is playing ping pong so when he found out that this was an activity available at the Police Youth Centre, he would jump on his bike braving the harsh weather anytime he could to play. Joe will see another part of Canada in the fall as he attends Acadia University in the Bachelor of Business Administration program.
Alterna Savings ($1,500 one time): Given to the Leaders-4-Life Member who shows growth, community involvement and potential to become a positive role model. Awarded to Josh Otim. Josh has been a member for the last five years at the Rochester Clubhouse. He has volunteered his time for various clubhouse activities, and has been a staff Camp Smitty. He is a graduating member of the Leaders 4 Life program and the skills he has learned echoes throughout the work he does with kids and his support of camp. His dream is to become a Social Worker and make a difference in Youth Mental Health initiatives. Josh has been accepted to Algonquin College for the Developmental Services Worker and Recreation and Leisure programs.
Scott Healey Memorial Scholarship ($2,500 each): Awarded to those who demonstrate leadership, initiative and strong character through sports. Awarded to Bashier Ahmed and Lilly Qiu.
Bashier has been a keen supporter of the athletic programs offered at our Britannia Clubhouse for the last seven years. He feels very connected to his own community and would one day like to create safe places to live with enough financial support for those in need by becoming an Engineer. Bashier has been accepted to Carleton University for Civil Engineering and Finance.
Lilly has been a member at various clubhouses throughout the city for the last eight years. She has been a part of several leadership programs including Leaders for Life and Youth Council, SSLL, and is an amazing artist showing her passion for the Creative Arts wherever she goes. Lilly has many talents creatively, athletically, and academically and will be attending the University of Ottawa for the Honours Bachelor of Science program with a specialization in Human Kinetics.
