January - Walk His Way - Ottawa Life Magazine

Lacing up his shoes as he heads out to hit the pavement, Gavin Lumsden is doing more than just going for another run. Lumsden is gearing up to train for his fiftieth marathon in 2015. But, that is not even the big news. Lumsden, supervising producer at Rogers TV Ottawa, will be running this milestone marathon to raise $50,000 for the Boys and Girls Club. This money will initiate the rollout of the Walk This Way program, currently exclusive to Ottawa, to Boys and Girls Clubs across Canada.

The Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa is making a call for Christmas gifts. The ‘Angel Tree Initiative’ aims to ensure that every BGCO youth between the ages of six and 13 have at least one gift this holiday season.

Police and 12 children from the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa spent Sunday morning shopping together in a nationwide program from Target called Heroes and Helpers.

On Monday, Karlsson relaunched the coffee brand he helped deliver last season in support of the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa.

November 17 - Erik Karlsson coffee brewing for Ottawa Boys & Girls Club - Metro

Erik Karlsson may have a second calling in blending coffee. It’s the second year the captain of the Ottawa Senators has developed his own blend at Bridgehead in support of the Boys & Girls Club.

November 13 - Awesome Boys and Girls Club Auction celebrates 22 years - Ottawa Community News

Another awesome event is set to take place in an effort to raise some money for the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa. The 22nd annual Awesome Auction is planned for Nov. 21 at the Shaw Centre.

It was a chance like no other for more than 400 youth gathered at the Gatineau-Ottawa Executive Airport. The Air Cadets and members of the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa gathered to listen to former astronaut Chris Hadfield speak as part of a youth summit put on by Vintage Wings of Canada.

June 17- Ringside for Youth XX - A Fundraising Success Story - Spotlight Ottawa
This is the story of how members of a community got together to help a financially strapped youth centre. That was 20 years ago, and the centre was the Ottawa Police Youth Centre, located in the Debra St./Dynes Ave. area…a neighbourhood which at one time, was plagued with crime.

Fahd Alhattab became interested in helping his community after getting involved with the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa (BGCO) when he  was seven years old. Since then, Fahd has been recognized as a youth leader by national organizations. Fahd-tastic!

Nine decades ago this week, the Ottawa Boys Club opened in the city’s downtown core. A social worker from Montréal was appointed as its executive director. His name was Fred C. McCann and he led the club through many changes, from expanding it to multiple locations to increasing its programming options and growing its membership.

About 25,000 people hit Mooney’s Bay beach on Saturday for the world’s largest one-day volleyball tournament. “This is my third year here so I’m always looking forward to coming back every summer,” said one participant. HOPE Volleyball Summerfest (Helping Other People Everywhere) benefits six local charities.

Stephen Beckta, a prominent Ottawa restauranteur, recently won the 2013 Outstanding Service Professional award at the Terroir Symposium in Toronto. To be recognized by the cream of the Canadian hospitality industry was, “definitely a huge honour and one of the highlights of my career,” said Beckta.

June 16 - Annual charity events prove to be perennial favourites - Ottawa Citizen Style
It truly was a week for charity events that have stood the test of time in Ottawa. A business-suit crowd of 1,300 was seen filing into the downtown Ottawa Convention Centre on Thursday for Ringside for Youth XIX. The dinner and boxing event has raised more than $2.35 million for the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa.

Growing up in St. Louis, Michael Spinks could easily have turned a wrong corner in life. Instead, the younger brother of Leon Spinks spent a lot of his time at recreation centres, where he, too, learned to box at a young age and went on to a storied career.

March 27 - Sens' superstar Erik Karlsson joins Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa  - Ottawa Sun Ottawa Senators superstar and Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson and wife Therese joined the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa Wednesday for a celebration after it was announced the pair would be become spokespeople for the club.

On an idyllic setting on Mink Lake in Eganville, sits a testimonial to the generosity of Ottawa’s community of builders and contractors. A charming log house, outfitted with the luxuries of home while offering the allure of a country retreat, was built as a vacation rental property to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa


March 2 - Passionate volunteer Nick Newton honoured - Ottawa Citizen

On Sunday, Feb. 10, Mayor Jim Watson along with Councillor Scott Moffatt presented the Mayor's City Builder to Wendy Newton on behalf of her late husband Nick Newton. A passionate volunteer residing in Manotick, Mr. Newton spent decades working with the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Algonquin College and the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, where he was a key figure for more than 60 years
